Bill Gates Explodes Onto The Social Media Scene

In advertising, Business, Economy, Entertainment, facebook, LinkedIn, marketing, News, social media, Technology, twitter on January 21, 2010 at 10:30 pm

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates finally joins Twitter on January 19, 2010 and in a near-record breaking frenzy of followers, has ended up with nearly 300,000 followers in 2 days.  The account is real and is not a squatter or impersonator as you see across social media.  It is a verified account and has also been validated from Twitter’s Caroline Mizumoto.

He has only had 12 tweets total, retweeting Ryan Seacrest about the final numbers raised for the American Red Cross and UNICEF, as well as retweeting Time’s list of people tweeting live from Haiti and a couple of replies to @aplusk and @RyanSeacrest.

He is following 42 people on Twitter, Microsoft, who Gates has surpassed by more than 6 times as many followers, a number of charitable and philanthropic organizations including UNICEF, WorldFoodPrize, MalariaNoMore and the Carnegie Foundation. Other notables that aren’t surprising are The Economist, Tech Crunch, The Huffington Post, and the NY Times.

Interestingly enough, yesterday at 1:20 pm, one of the most intriguing people that Gates opted to follow on Twitter was High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale. This could be because he is a huge fan of High School Musical, a supporter of Disney, or perhaps it’s because Ashley has done some work with Microsoft in the past. Whatever the reason, it must have been fleeting.  Since then, it seems as though he has reconsidered his choice. Maybe it was all of the press surrounding it.  Check out a few of the stories we found:  http://ow.ly/Zdnx http://ow.ly/Zdn8

Other than that, it seems like he may have joined Twitter to promote a new website. It’s the link that he has provided in his bio as well as the content for a couple of his tweets. Here is his tweet promoting his new website:

My new website is live check out www.thegatesnotes.com. Excited to share more about what I’m learning, hope you like it! 2:06 PM Jan 20th from web

The site that he used Twitter to launch is an ambitious blog and information site. It is called The Gates Notes: An Inside Look At Global Matters. The note that was sent out yesterday regarding the site and the effort is below:

Today, Bill Gates launched The Gates Notes (www.gatesnotes.com), a website designed to share his learning and excitement with his new foundation work along with his personal interests in areas such as energy and the environment. Bill has been spending time learning a lot from thought leaders in their fields. He has been taking notes and sending emails, and the site is a collection of the conversations, books, articles, trips and people who have inspired and informed Bill. The site is designed to encourage people to dig deeper–to explore questions from multiple angles. Bill will update the content on an ongoing basis, and we also plan to add some features in the near future to make the site more interactive such as RSS and commenting/discussions.

Upon visiting the site, a welcome note from Gates greets you:

Welcome to the Gates Notes

Since leaving my fulltime job at Microsoft to dedicate more time to our foundation, a lot of people have asked me what I’m working on. It often feels like I’m back in school, as I spend a lot of my time learning about issues I’m passionate about.

I’m fortunate because the people I’m working with and learning from are true experts in their fields. I take a lot of notes, and often share them and my own thoughts on the subject with others through email, so I can learn from them and expand the conversation.

I thought it would be interesting to share these conversations more widely with a website, in the hope of getting more people thinking and learning about the issues I think are interesting and important. So, welcome to the Gates Notes.

He has also joined Facebook, attracting over 60,000 fans already, generating a number of interactions from fans.  He has promoted the new website for blogs through his facebook page as well.

So, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and a new website? What’s next for Bill Gates? Foursquare? YouTube? Linked In? Or is he just doing research?

Elvis: The Rock ‘N Roll Legend That Trends On Twitter

In advertising, Business, Economy, facebook, marketing, social media, Technology, twitter on January 9, 2010 at 3:00 am

The King of Rock And Rock

Here at Evans Media Group, there is a generational gap that brings over 75 years of experience to our agency.  Yet, the younger of the partners, the one that happened to be born after Elvis officially “left the building” in 1977, was adamant about writing a blog post to commemorate Elvis’ 75th birthday.

Validation came when it became a trending topic on Twitter, yet disappointment crept in when Google overlooked it, and opted to ignore the 75th birthday of the King. This revelation, coupled with our senior partner’s utter love of rock and roll, resulted in our attempt at celebrating his contribution across so many industries and genres.

It is an inspiration to see that we still celebrate the true legends and don’t seem to forget them but use tools that didn’t even exist in his prime to memorialize him. Fans showed up in droves to celebrate him at Graceland despite cool temps and the potential for snow.

Image from elvis.com

The turnout in person and in the social space show that Elvis continues to live in the hearts and minds of so many Americans.  With video montages on YouTube, the #Elvis trending topic on Twitter, his Facebook fan page touting nearly 500,000 fans and features on the Today Show, NPR, Rolling Stone magazine, Elvis struck up some serious buzz in cyberspace.

While most of us, even members of Gen Y, “Can’t Help Falling In Love” with this iconic symbol of rock and roll, another symbol of our times, Google, chose to pass on a great opportunity to commemorate the legend, it did not go unnoticed by fans or the Googlebots. A fan posted a question on Google’s forum, has yet to see a response, but does find itself atop the Google search.

Great images, videos, and songs were shared across numerous social network sites, transporting many back to the time when he was first on the scene performing rockabilly, an uptempo fusion of country and rhythm and blues with a strong backbeat.  In his commercial breakthrough in 1956, he was recognized as the leading figure of the new fad, rock and roll, though his antics were highly controversial. His well-known uninhibited performances were popular with many of the young ladies from his very first performance. Though he was shaking his legs in response to the rhythm and due to nervousness, as his wide-cut pants emphasized his movements, the women began to scream, the crowd went wild, and the rest is what we are still talking about on his 75th birthday.

Elvis Presley is regarded as one of the most important figures of pop culture in the twentieth century, and continues to be the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music.

75 years later, the King still shows us that while the trending topic on Twitter may not be “Elvis Is Back” but that music he recorded in the 60s provided “Something for Everybody” and proves to us all that fans worldwide are wishing you Happy 75th Birthday and still … “Loving You.”

So, You’re On The Social Media Bandwagon. Now What?

In advertising, Business, Economy, facebook, LinkedIn, marketing, social media, Technology, twitter on December 3, 2009 at 8:30 pm

In previous posts, we have discussed ways to monitor your online reputation, but what if you are the small to medium-sized business owner that is late to the game?

Step 1? Start listening.

How do you do that? Well, this can be done internally, or it can be outsourced, but don’t think because that twenty-something in your office that texts, tweets, and has a Facebook status update for each hour of the day, that they are the candidate to manage your brand, your online marketing strategy, or equally important, your marketing budget. Think you can’t afford to outsource it? Shop around, you might be surprised.  Either way you go, the brand ambassador who manages this task must be reading blogs daily, be familiar with the people who are interacting with you on all social media networks, whether they are tweeters, vloggers, bloggers, or just merely commenters.

Listening is only as effective as the content that you choose to hear.  You will want to find content that has high relevancy to your industry, your company and your competitors.  There are hundreds of millions of blogs out there, which doesn’t include all of the videos uploaded to YouTube, the millions of Tweets, forum posts, and pictures that are shared across the ever-evolving multitude of social networks.

Overwhelmed yet? It’s okay. You read at over 1,000 words per minute right? If not, don’t sweat it. Even if you could, and you couldn’t possibly find everything that is relevant, wouldn’t be able to follow it all, and luckily, you don’t need to.  It varies by business, but generally there are less than 20 blogs that generate the majority of conversations in your niche. So, how do you determine what to follow and what is not worthy of your precious time?  Go for the biggest fish in the pond.  Find the biggest blogs in the community, and monitor other pieces of the digital conversation from other sources.

Here are some of the tools  you can use to search for conversations about your brand, your competitors, or your industry, by searching for industry buzzwords, your brand name or your competitors name:

Discussion Forum Searches – BoardTracker is currently tracking 69,230,256 threads in 37,284 Forums

Monitoring the Blogosphere – Google Blog Search is a great tool, but can yield a lot of splog results (spam blogs generated automatically by keyword searches). This would be an alternative to Google News Alerts, if you already subscribe to these. Ideally, you would want to monitor key company executives, your brand, your competition and your industry. (Get the picture yet?)

All of these search results can be subscribed to via email or as an RSS feed, and then you can share the appropriate feeds with any key individuals in your organization that you feel should also be plugged in.

Summary?

The most important step in any successful social media campaign launch is listening. By listening to the buzz about your brand – you will best position yourself to identify the brand junkies in your niche, find out what your audience is most interested in, and determine the best strategies to introduce your company into these conversations.

East Coast Social Media Agency Relocates to Kansas City Metro

In advertising, Automotive, Business, Economy, facebook, LinkedIn, marketing, social media, Technology, twitter on November 19, 2009 at 1:12 pm

Overland Park, KS (EMG) – November 17, 2009. When a series of events brought about the opportunity for Paul Evans to relocate Evans Media Group, a boutique advertising and social media agency to the Midwest from its original location just outside New York City, Evans and his partner wasted no time. “Over the years, business had brought me to Kansas City many times and I had always been intrigued by this center of culture and diversity in the heartland” said Evans from his Overland Park, KS office.

“My partner was originally from Missouri, although meeting and dealing with her, one would assume she hailed from Madison Avenue in New York, the heart of the agency business”, he quipped. “But between her urgings and my growing love of the KC metro, we took the plunge and moved our entire operation”.

The nature of the business at Evans Media Group had been in a state of change anyway said EMG Managing Partner and CTO, Sara Paxton. “The move from a more traditional media agency to one that focused more on the social aspects of marketing had been underway for some time at EMG. The sheer virtuality of our clients and our agency were becoming more apparent every day. While our closeness to New York City and our 300 year old farm house office was attractive to us personally, our physical location was diminishing in importance as our client base became more mobile and less brick and mortar”, she said.

The agency focuses primarily on smaller businesses, although both partners have worked for multi-national corporate entities, they are sworn to help grow small business and as a founding principle, believe that America runs on small business. President and CMO Evans explains, “We try to provide small business with all the tools and opportunity available to big business but at a fraction of what it would normally cost to access those contrivances. With social media at the forefront and traditional media experience providing the historical skill set, EMG clients can leverage the best of both worlds.

EMG clients range from manufacturing and web development, to mail order distributors and food and beverage purveyors, luxury day spas, high end magazine publishers and a division of Kraft Foods, but as Paxton underscores, “We are extremely fluid … changing and morphing into what our clients need us to be as the tides of social media shift and look different from week to week”. Evans adds, “As an example of how the landscape changes offer greater opportunity, we now offer something that is so new I don’t think anybody else is doing it yet … live managed social media updating from an event or happening.

Managed being the operative word here … this is not a group of text-fervent fans, but an actual, planned and managed effort directed at disseminating branded messaging in real time, targeting fans and followers that are not at the event”.

Recently an annual charity boxing event was updated with text, images and streaming video to Facebook and twitter, live by a team from Evans Media Group from ring-side. The resulting push generated a unprecedented flow of activity and brand awareness for the event and contributing sponsors. Like a radio station live-remote, gone web 2.0!

This kind of think-on-your-feet functionality, coupled with solid public relations and marketing practice is what sets Evans Media Group apart in the agency world. “Yes, said Evans, “We’re quite a bit different from most traditional, or even social media agencies … we are a little off the wall, willing to try anything new, based in traditional marketing, but with a full grasp on the new”.

As their website proclaims, Evans Media Group, Kansas City’s Social Media Agency uses a combination of Research, Media Relations, Publicity, and Social Marketing Communications to promote clients to the widest possible segment of the public and business communities. They still believe that the most significant person in an agency/client relationship is the client. That may be an old fashioned set of principles in a new aged world, but according to Evans and Paxton, it’s what makes their clients happy to see them when they walk through their door.

Says Paxton, “We can be your local resource to kick start a stagnant social media marketing campaign across the top social networks, like LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube etc. But we still talk to businesses every day that have yet to venture over to the social media side … and that’s okay too. We specialize in launching social media efforts where no prior presence, experience or online reputation has been established”.

Evans concurs, “If a business is not sure what they are looking for, or how much they should invest in social media, or any advertising for that matter … just give Evans Media Group a call and we will perform a no charge on-site analysis of what it will take to get the Twitterverse abuzz about you, your business and your brand.

TWEET THIS!!

In advertising, Automotive, Business, collision repair, Economy, facebook, LinkedIn, marketing, social media, Technology, twitter on November 3, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Those words, delivered “Goodfellas – Joe Pesci-like” as the body shop owner grasped himself below the belt, had everybody chuckling … pretty funny initially … this guy also does a pretty good Di Nero, but in retrospect, it was quite sad … let me explain.

Now I’m not going to reveal who said it, or even what State the body shop owner is from (It was on the East coast … ). I wouldn’t want to besmirch an entire State by contributing to an old stereotypical stigma that we in collision repair would like to overcome. But the fact is, as funny as the guy was trying to be … he really does think that tweeting, FaceBook, digg and any other social media applications are (in his words …) “a fad”.

It’s a fad alright … like television, cell phones and Al Gore’s invention … the Internet, were fads. Come on people (you know who you are … ) I can’t believe I still have to say this … but those of you out there that either want to wait and see, or don’t trust the technology, or thinks it just something kids do … Guess Again! E-Marketer.com just released a new digital intelligence study showing that more than half of social network users consider shared info when making a purchase decision. More than half! That would be over 150 million people on FaceBook alone! You can see the whole study, if you like looking at that stuff, at http://bit.ly/asI69 but trust me, I just gave you the most important factoid … 50% of social network users consider what others on their networks say before deciding to use … YOU.

And don’t just take my word for it. If like me you are a visual person … go to YouTube and watch this amazing video on where we are today with social media http://bit.ly/24qNSS.

I’ve said it before … we have almost 2,800 twitter followers at Evans Media Group and if I have a great experience at a restaurant (like yesterday at Pei Wei Asian restaurant) we can, and do tell 2,800 people instantly … by the same token when we are poorly serviced or feel taken advantage of, those same 2,800 people will know. Our followers have networks too of course, and word (good or bad), re-tweets (that’s RT’s for those in the know) and FaceBook wall posts spread at the speed of light today. And by the way, the thinking that social media is just for kids is so far off base it’s laughable. The fastest growing segment on FaceBook today is the 55-65 year old female!

My advice to body shops is simple. Get out in front of this thing … to some of you it may seem like herding cats or managing chaos … it’s not. It is the future of advertising, and it should be part of your marketing initiative now. Don’t just trust your social media effort to that guy in your shop who’s always texting his girlfriend either, there is plenty of qualified help out there and it is important enough to do it right!

To my friend on the East Coast who would rather make fun and be dismissive … Martin Scorsese called … he said “TWEET THAT!”

Of course, that’s just my opinion … I could be wrong!
